In a typical Lone Peak versus American Fork boys basketball slugfest, the Knights used a quick start, great defense and solid free-throw shooting to defeat American Fork 67-47 in front of a full house in Highland on Wednesday night.

There were a combined 61 free throws in the game. The Knights took 40 of those and made 31, while the Cavemen were a stellar 17-of-21.

It was what happened at the beginning that made the difference, however.

American Fork actually started with a 4-2 lead, when Tannon Pedersen got fouled shooting beyond the arc. He hit all three foul shots to give the Knights a 5-4 advantage at the 4:41 mark of the first period.

During the next two minutes, Brady Berry added two inside buckets off inbounds passes from brother Brody Berry, plus a free throw, to push the advantage to 10-4.

He later had a steal and assisted Pedersen on a trey, which made the margin 13-4 heading into the second period.

The Cavemen continued to play hard the entire game but could never gain much ground on the home team.

Ben Beddes and Michael Wells each had a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch, but it wasn't enough to overcome American Fork's 25-point deficit early in the final period.

Beddes had a sensational night for the Cavemen, netting 23 points, including three triples and 8-of-8 at the line, and also had 10 rebounds.

Marcel Davis added a solid 13 points, but no one else on the visiting side could manage more than six, and that just wasn't enough to defeat a Lone Peak team that used seven scorers and shot very effectively from the field.

"We had a game plan, and through three quarters, we executed it well," said Lone Peak coach Quincy Lewis. "Our big guys did a great job boxing out, which allowed our guards to get a lot of rebounds.

"Brady Berry did a great job doing a lot of little things out there that helped us."

Berry finished with 11 points. Nick Emery had a highlight-reel night on the way to 21 points, and Pedersen had 18; the two of them combined for 19-of-23 at the line. In addition, Emery got seven rebounds and two steals, while Brody Berry had five boards and four assists to go with his six points.

"Also, against their pressure defense, we took care of the ball," Lewis said.

The Knights had just 11 turnovers in this emotional contest.

"That's a team that likes to get up and down the floor, but they got only one or two quick shots all night," the coach continued. "It was a great effort by our guys.

"That's the best 0-5 team in region in state history," Lewis added. "That's a very good team that's just had some tough breaks."

For their next contests, the Knights (11-2, 2-2) travel to Hillcrest (6-7, 0-4) on Friday, while the Cavemen (8-6, 0-5) will host the Huskies on Wednesday. The games are set to tip off at 7 p.m.
