Work Hard... Play When?

My parents always said work hard, play hard, sleep fast.  But years ago I put on the wall in the bathroom, 

Work hard, Play Hard and Trust God!!

One day the week before Mother's Day, we got a call from the Stake President who was on the phone with Brady's mission President.  They felt it was time for Brady to come home.  He was just not getting better.  Brady had been treated for a skin problem since 4 months into his mission.  I was a little in shock because, I have worried about him, but have had a feeling of comfort that when he came home everything would be alright.  I am sure I sounded like a pretty mean mom when I said, I didn't want him to come home, he will be alright.  Then the mission President reminded me that we need to do what was right for Brady.  I responded with he doesn't want to come home, he just needs some help.  Well I hung up form talking to them and they called Todd.  Todd told them that he wanted to talk to him first before they sent him home.  So with Mother's day just a few days away they agreed.  

So for the next couple of days we worked hard...

We had started a couple of projects in the yard thinking we had till August to get things cleaned up, but that is not what the Lord had in mind for us.

We took out all the brick around the window wells and along the back of the house, and grandpa made grow boxes for us out of the left over fence.  They are so awesome!

Goal Called Back...Davis Wins No Tripe Crown For Brody

High school sports: Lone Peak's Brody Berry contending for a triple crown

HIGHLAND — Most athletes pass through high school hoping for just a single state championship.

A few make that dream a reality, and a small handful of others are lucky enough to win multiple championships.

But to win three state championships in a single year?

It's almost unheard of.

Unless, that is, you're Lone Peak's Brody Berry, who will be vying for his third state championship of this school year when the 5A state soccer playoffs begin this coming week.

The year started with Berry helping to secure the 5A state football championship for Lone Peak. He started at free safety while handling the kicking and punting duties. He then played an integral role starting at guard to help Lone Peak win its second straight state basketball title.

This spring, he's been on the soccer pitch, playing a key role to help his team exceed expectations and earn a spot in the 5A playoffs.

As one could imagine, competing in three straight sports for the duration of an entire school year is taxing. Berry admits to wearing down a bit, including battling through some ligament damage which keeps his ankles sore all the time.

So why do it?

"I just love to always be competing, and I think I'd get really bored if I wasn't playing," answered Berry. "Going home and just hanging out just sounds boring to me, so this way I always have something to do and I love all three sports that I play.

"I've loved them ever since I started playing them."

Like a lot of people, Berry started off playing soccer when he was barely old enough to walk. Basketball came next with Berry competing on the hardwood since the fourth grade before taking to the gridiron in the eighth grade.

To compete and excel at all three sports takes a lot of dedication — not just from Berry, but from his family as well. His father, Todd, describes the support as being expensive but well worth it.

"All the fundraising and everything else has taken a lot of time and money, but it's sure been fun watching Brody play like he has over the years," said Todd. "I knew early on that Brody had the type of personality that he'd want to compete. He had an older brother that he'd always be fighting with and pushing — he just doesn't like to lose, so we always knew he'd want to compete in sports."

Fortunately for Brody and his family, he's not only been able to compete — he's been able to compete at Lone Peak, whose basketball and now football and even soccer programs are top notch.

"It's just an accomplishment to be able to play on a team at Lone Peak when you consider all the kids that played the same sports that Brody did and the quality of the programs," said Todd. "To start in just one sport is great, but to start in three is quite the accomplishment, so to see him do that makes me think that all the time and money we put into it was well worth it."

If Brody had to play just one sport, it would be basketball. And fortunately for him he'll have the opportunity to play basketball at the next level with BYU-Hawaii offering him a scholarship. His plan is to play a year for the Seasiders before leaving on a planned LDS mission where he'll have to make do just playing one sport.

"They actually wanted me to play soccer as well, but after talking it over with my dad, we decided that playing just one sport would be enough with all the extra studying and being in college," said Brody. "Ever since I was little it's been a goal of mine to serve a mission, so it will be hard giving up playing to serve for two years, but it's easier having made that decision such a long time ago and having that as a constant goal. I'm excited to have that opportunity to serve."

The comment from the paper:  Brody is positive that this is Mr. Hillard, his favorite teacher from 6th grade at Highland Elementary.  He always told Brody all the way through elementary, that he was going to be great - He had the fire in his eyes.

Prep soccer: Lone Peak’s Berry chases third ring of year

When the latest addition to his collection arrived two weeks ago, Brody Berry wore it around Lone Peak for a day. Then, he went home and put it in the special case his family installed close to the front door.

The guy has a thing for rings.

Winning them, that is.

Berry won consecutive championships the past two years as the point guard on the Knights basketball team, a football championship last fall and, as a striker on the Region 4 champion soccer team, is chasing an unheard-of third team championship in his senior year.

“It never crossed my mind winning all three,” Berry said. “I always thought of winning football and basketball.”

The Knights have been a surprise in Class 5A, playing in perhaps its toughest region against teams such as Lehi and Bingham, which were state favorites in the preseason.

Lone Peak, which entered the week 13-2-0, has beaten them both twice, thanks in large part to Berry, who will play basketball next year at BYU-Hawaii.

“He’s not afraid to grab a guy by the jersey and say, you better do this,” Lone Peak basketball coach Quincy Lewis said. “Any coach who coaches for 20, 25 years is lucky to coach one guy like him.”

So it’s no accident that Berry may be positioned for his third championship of this academic year. And the soccer team doesn’t much mind him chasing the distinction.

“His personal goals align with our team goals,” first-year soccer coach Blaine Hale said. “Hopefully we’ll be able to make that happen. I think that will be a neat experience for him.”

Hale played football, basketball and soccer at Lone Peak, too, winning a soccer championship as a senior in 2005.

Berry said soccer, as sports go, was his first love. In football he was a secondary option as a receiver for Tribune MVP quarterback Chase Hansen and, in basketball, he ran the Knights’ offense, but got little attention compared with BYU-committed stars Nick Emery and T.J. Haws.

As a forward for the soccer team this spring, he’s scored three goals, well off the team lead.

But Berry’s role on each team, Lewis said, can’t be overstated.

“In my book, guys who lead by example are way overrated,” he said. “I want a guy who leads vocally and that’s who he is. He’s not afraid to tell guys exactly what needs to happen, no matter who they are.”

And college coaches put a premium on winning. Berry said BYU-Hawaii coaches were sold on him, in part, because he had been a leader on so many successful teams.

“That’s the No. 1 thing they kept saying was how much they liked me,” he said, “and I knew how to win.”

He’s been doing it for years, dating back to U-12 club soccer when he and his team, Utah Rangers, won the state championship and advanced to the western regionals in Colorado.

And now, with the playoffs starting next week, most likely against Hunter, Berry has one more chance at a state championship.

“We just have to work harder than any other team in the state,” he said.

Talk about a familiar ring.

Hollie has gotten so tall that we needed to get her some new clothes.  For her Birthday, we went shopping for new dresses or something to wear to church.  When we got home we had to get dad's approval, so the fashion show began....

They wanted it to be a surprise so they wore the bathrobes to cover them up - silly girls! 

Miriah was so thrilled with your Dress for Easter that she wanted to model it too.

It is a Costco special, we love it when the dresses at Costco have sleeves because they are only around $15.00.

 Hollie's outfit came from Seagull Book,  They really have some cute clothes.  We still had the problem of some of them being to short, since she is getting so tall.  But she was patient with her mom and continued to look until we found a few that came to her knees.

 HollieAnne, I can't believe that my little girl is growing up.  She is a Beautiful Young Women now.

Dad approved, the girls were so excited since they really did not want to take anything back.

Prep boys’ soccer: Lone Peak beats Riverton 3-0

Riverton • After watching Riverton’s midfield dominate play in the first half of a scoreless soccer match, Knights coach Blaine Hale had some choice words for a team that was outshot, outplayed and outhustled.

Only the quick feet and hands of Lone Peak’s senior goalkeeper Kaden Killpack kept the net clean as Riverton had several looks on runs from Kenny Marse, and a corner kick in the 28th minute that came alarmingly close to finding the goal.
After a scoreless first half, Lone Peak responded with three goals, all of them coming on an assist from a teammate.
 Midway through the second half, Lone Peak goalkeeper Kaden Killpack found himself on an island after Riverton’s Kenny Marse split two defenders for what appeared to be a clean shot. Killpack smothered the shot and snuffed out any thoughts of a comeback.

A reinvigorated Lone Peak midfield took over after half, pushing forward, attacking and bringing the heat with goals in the 12th, 16th and 26th minutes to earn the 3-0, Region 4 win.
"I just felt like we pressured them better and came forward like coach talked about at half," said junior midfielder Tyler Allison, who scored the first goal and assisted Zack Cromar on the second.
Lone Peak showed a flair for the unselfish, as all three goals were assisted, including the final marker from Brody Berry, who passed up a good shot to give Landon Wilson a better shot.

"No one really cares who scores and for us. It’s all about doing it for the team." Allison said.

Riverton had just two real scoring opportunities in the second half, one when the lightning-quick Marse split two defenders late, only to have his shot snuffed by Killpack, who has given up just one goal in his last six outings.
"Riverton really showed their ability to counterattack in that first half, and they were beating our midfielders to the attack," said Hale. "Kaden is just so strong back there for us, but the midfield getting into the flow and attacking was key."

Lone Peak, 3-0 in Region 4, is at undefeated Lehi on Friday, while Riverton, 1- 1 in region, hosts Bingham on Wednesday.

Utah High School Basketball Coaches Association All Star Game

Area boys basketball players showed very well during the Utah High School Basketball Coaches Association senior all-star games sponsored Friday at West Jordan High School.
The capstone of the event was the first 5A versus 5A matchup, a highly entertaining and very competitive contest that featured dozens of lead changes before the South team pulled out a 159-157 victory.
No, that isn’t a misprint.
The score was tied at 74 by halftime. The South squad trailed by seven points with two minutes to play but finished the contest on a 9-0 run to get the thrilling win.
Lehi’s Colton Colledge was the key player down the stretch, with four rebounds and a steal before he was sent to the free-throw line with the score tied and six-tenths of a second remaining.
He coolly dropped in both shots to ice the game for the South. He finished the night with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds and also had three blocked shots.

Lone Peak’s Brody Berry tied the game with a pair of free throws when there was 48 seconds left, completing his tally with six points, eight boards, eight assists and a steal.
American Fork’s Marcel Davis played a critical role in a couple of the South team’s runs to catch up. He hit five treys among his 26 points and also had 10 assists and two steals.
His teammates made contributions also. Austin Waddoups did a terrific job at the point, as well as personally delivering 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and a steal. Quincy Bair added 21 points, while Zac Hunter netted 11 with nine boards.
Each player on the team scored at least one of the 25 combined 3-pointers they made.
Knight coach Quincy Lewis skippered the winning squad. Playing for the North team, Mr. Basketball Jordan Loveridge of West Jordan scored a game-high 29 points.

Very Fun Evening!  So sad to see it end!

It has been a blast this year being the team parent, and being involved.  Just love the team, the boys, the coaches.  We have had a great time over the last 4 years with these seniors and the other players.

Lots of memories - Spaghetti Lunches every home game that fell on a B day.  Texting play by play to all the parents from Indianapolis, Pam Hansen texting me from Boston and NC and then forwarding them to everyone else.  Car Washes, Roofing over Spring Break (thanks Ty for helping the boys make money) clothing drive with IWC, It has been an amazing year.
